Tailored AI Chatbots for Everyone: OpenAI Unveils Custom ChatGPT at Tech Conference.

At its inaugural technology conference, OpenAI unveiled a unique function that allows anyone to create their personal versions of the ChatGPT model, even without any coding knowledge. These customized chatbots, known as GPTs, are adept at handling a myriad of situations and use cases. For instance, a business could develop a GPT exclusively for company-specific tasks, while parents might set up one to aid their children with complex mathematics problems. The initiative, reflected as an expansion on the Custom Instructions launched earlier, is OpenAI's response to users desiring further control over their AI tools.

The actual process of creating a personalized GPT model is seemingly simple, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman demonstrated during the conference. Nevertheless, it involves multiple steps. To begin with, users need a subscription to ChatGPT Plus for $20 monthly or ChatGPT Enterprise for businesses. Users then access the 'Create a GPT' option from their account, and the GPT Builder tool will guide them by asking what they want to create. For instance, in Sam Altman's demo, a business advice chatbot for technology startups was generated.

The system then crafts an initial AI model that is previewed on the screen's right side. The GPT Builder will press for additional information, such as the chatbot's name or chosen thumbnail image. If necessary, users can further refine the AI by uploading their data files. Advanced integrations can be enabled, such as internet browsing or incorporating the DALL-E image generator. Once satisfied, users can store their chatbot for later fine-tuning or share it with the public via a link. OpenAI will support select third-party services, enabling the model to fetch data from "emails, databases, and more". A live demo showcased a user connecting their chatbot to Google Calendar via the Zapier tool.

Addressing privacy concerns, OpenAI emphasized that all chat interaction with a customized GPT is entirely private unless the user explicitly grants permission, offering users control over their data. However, OpenAI assured they have checks in place to assess user-generated GPTs to ensure alignment with company policies and to avoid content that promotes "fraudulent activity, hateful content, or adult themes".

As of now, the beta version of GPT Builder is available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Later in November, OpenAI intends to introduce the GPT Store, showcasing "creations by verified builders." Users will be able to explore chatbots developed by others spanning categories such as productivity and education. Indeed, starting the following year, it will be plausible for users to monetize their chatbots based on user count.

OpenAI's announcement signals an intriguing future for AI, and it will be fascinating to see which chatbot takes the top spot on the GPT Store leaderboard.
