FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki Confirms No Current Plans for Elden Ring 2 Amid New Project Developments
Dec-04-2024
Recently, Hidetaka Miyazaki, who serves as both the director of Elden Ring and the president of FromSoftware, indicated that the company is not planning to develop Elden Ring 2 at this time. However, he has not ruled out the possibility for the future. During the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event, which was attended by various media outlets, he mentioned that FromSoftware is currently focused on multiple projects but none of them will extend the Elden Ring storyline, the studio's most acclaimed title thus far.
Miyazaki expressed that the company is not actively pursuing developments for a sequel to Elden Ring but is open to exploring the franchise further "in some form in the future." The ongoing initiatives are at different phases of advancement and span a range of genres, with several directed by Miyazaki himself.
FromSoftware has a rich history in game development, particularly recognized for shaping the Souls genre over the last 15 years. Although these games exhibit a variety of themes, they consistently follow a role-playing format where players navigate through challenging environments before facing formidable adversaries.
In addition, FromSoftware also works on the Armored Core series, a giant mech combat franchise, as well as other unique titles like Bloodborne, which integrates elements of gothic horror, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which draws from Japanese mythology.
While no specific details about the upcoming projects have been disclosed, it is widely anticipated that one of them will be another prominent entry in the Souls series, similar to Elden Ring. Numerous fans are eager for the return of the Dark Souls series, which has remained inactive for nearly ten years, while others await a potential sequel to Bloodborne, believing an announcement could come soon.
Although Elden Ring might seem like the obvious candidate for a follow-up, particularly given its critical and commercial success with over 25 million units sold, the direction of future titles remains uncertain.
In an earlier evaluation, it was observed that Elden Ring represents a significant evolution of the gameplay mechanics introduced in the Souls series, offering players a challenging combat experience within an expansive open world that allows for personalized exploration.
