Collaboration and Creativity: Icíar Bollaín and Luis Tosar's Impact on Spanish Cinema
Mar-19-2025

Luis Tosar has positioned himself as a key player in Spanish cinema starting from the late 1990s and continuing into the 2000s. His remarkable his abilities have garnered him several honors, including multiple Goya Awards for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, as well as the Silver Shell at the San Sebastian Festival. This year, his performance in Undercover (La infiltrada) has garnered him yet another nomination for Best Supporting Male Actor at the Goyas, where the film was awarded the Goya for Best Film.
During a discussion at the San Diego Comic-Con Málaga, we had the opportunity to engage with the acclaimed director Icíar Bollaín, who holds a deep respect for Tosar in both their careers and personal lives. They have worked together on several films, including Take My Eyes and Maixabel, which showcased his exceptional acting ability, earning him a nod for Best Actor in a Male Role at the Goya Awards.
Bollaín reflected on their first project together, stating that Luis Tosar starred in her debut feature, 'Flores de otro mundo.' She expressed her belief in his versatility and talent by saying, "I think Luis can make anything credible." The director fondly recalls a memorable moment from the short film 'Por tu bien,' in which she chose to portray a unique perspective on childbirth by casting Tosar in the role. "I wanted to tackle the problem of abuse directed at women during childbirth. Instead of showing the typical scene we are all used to, I opted for Luis Tosar. He truly captures the essence, and you can believe in his performance."
As we look toward the future, it remains uncertain whether their paths will cross again in another project. For now, enthusiasts can enjoy the full interview featuring Spanish subtitles above, as well as watch the short film 'Por tu bien' as referenced by Bollaín.
